From the very very other end of the spectrum of racing games that brought us Burnout 2 comes a racing game to make even Colin McRae look unrealistic. I came across Live For Speed yesterday. After downloading and installing, I was in vehicle-simulation heaven. Utterly realistic physics, completely tweakable car setup (toe-in camber per wheel, anyone?) leads to an experience much akin to the old Grand Prix Legends game - you scream up to a corner at 100mph, stomp on the brakes and turn to full lock... then the car either goes into an uncontrollable spin, or just slides in a straight line, emitting plumes of smoke. Either way, you plough full-tilt into an oncoming barrier.
Back to the pits, some tweaking, some mental notes to feather the brake gently, and you're powersliding around corners with an immense feeling of achievement. 3 cars and 4 tracks in the test version - but it looks like you need to do quite a few races before you're qualified (or allowed) to race the faster cars.
Graphics aren't too bad either, and multiplayer seems good (including a big sign that says 'LAG' above a car if it's lagging) - highly recommended. See you on the starting grid.

Black Magic?
ShreddedBeat's second release, the not-quite-as-good ThumbTanic, is 4 times the resolution, looks at least 26 times better (a bit subjective) - but is under half the size. Check it out.

ThumbWars is now up on Edonkey (Or, if you'd actually like a useable interface, Emule), ripped in lovely audio and video quality by those nicy boys from ShreddedBeats
Expect BatThumb tomorrow night, closely followed by ThumbTanic - next week, FrankenThumb, GodThumb and The Blair Thumb Project.
...happy days are here again...

Pontifex2 is finally out.
Get it from Chronic Logic or here if you've come into the new millennium.
A patch is coming soon to fix a few of it's... nuances... but overall it's a lot better than the original Pontifex. But of course it is. I helped.

From As Above:
'"I am super angry. I am going to explode!" - the Japanese dog-bark translation device is in the news again, for some reason. It'd be interesting to remap it for human voice patterns, to boil complex conversations down to a few basic combinations of inferred emotions.'

I have just experienced one of the more surreal moments of my life.
I was asked to sign a Burnout 2 poster ('Win a copy of the game, or a poster signed by the Burnout 2 team!') - so 10 poor souls are going to get a picture of a car with my scrawl all over the roof of it.
On the other hand, it's nice to be on the 'other' side of a competition.
Not that I ever won a signed poster.
Still, I have my shiny new copy of Burnout 2 here, and no you can't have a copy.
